At least once a year I talk myself into a ride that “won’t be that hard”. These rides usually involve starting out with a route I’m familiar with and then extending it. The not to hard bits are the portions I’ve never ridden. Those parts always end up being harder than I think they will be. I’ve watched a lot of locals make this loop on ebikes. I reasoned that I’m pretty strong. I do all kinds of hard climbs. I’m not as fast as an ebike but I can usually get to the spots they can get to.
I’ve included a mass quantity of photos below to help illustrate the epic nature of this ride. The climb up Millville Canyon is exhausting. Once you’ve completed it there’s still plenty to climb as you make your way across the Little Baldy. You’ll descend into Providence Canyon, but then there are yet more climbs before a final technical descent from the top down into the quarry.
If you go take more than one bottle of water. I was punished with leg cramps from dehydration. If you are on an ebike make sure you have a full charge and you’ll for sure appreciated the assistance. If you make this journey under your own power be prepared for a number of hours in the saddle. If you are going without a friend to guide you it is worth taking a Garmin preloaded with the route from Strava to guide you.
Wow it was amazing. Also, wow it was hard.
